Some land, vineyards, and cattle - that was the unspectacular beginning of the winery Kranz in 1948. Hilda and Willi Dennhart founded the winery and mainly sold bulk wine until their daughter Liselotte took over the winery in the 70s. Together with her husband she successfully run the business until the next generation followed their footsteps: their son Boris Kranz and his wife Kerstin Kranz are running the estate today. The Kranz family is in the southern Palatinate wine scene well known, especially since the winery has in 2012 been accepted as a member in the VPD (Verband deutscher Prädikatsweingüter = Union of German quality wine makers). The modern family estate is considered as prime producer of elegant burgundy wines with palatinate roots.
Boris already saw the potential of the Kalmit vineyard when people said it was too steep and inconvenient. Limestone is the basic soil of the vineyard and allows the vines to root deeply to get enough water. Because of the southern hillside, the grapes enjoy sun through the whole day which leads to ripe and powerful wines - An optimal Burgundy site. The 2020 Weißburgunder Tonmergel shows a whole basket of fruit aromas - rich notes of peach, quince, ripe apricots and honeydew. The taste is full bodied with delicious hints of honey and a long mineral taste.
Enjoy this delicious wine with seafood, grilled carée of Iberico pork and fish roasted on the skin.
