Château du Retout is located in the Haut Médoc appellation in Bordeaux. The phylloxera crisis of the late 19th century and WWI brought a great deal of damage to the vineyards in Médoc. This led to some smaller vineyards being abandoned and many small Médoc estates disappearing completely. This is what happened to Château Retout-Rosset even though it had been classified as Cru Bourgeois. The estate only came back to life in the 1950s, when it was acquired by the Kopp family. The wine “Esperance” is a typical Médoc-Cuvée based on Cabernet Sauvignon, which is rounded by some Merlot and Petit Verdot. The 2015 vintage is very harmonious, and the aromatic bouquet reminds you of red berries, plums and dark chocolate.
